Integrated circuits also called chips or microchips have many different applications in circuits. Some can be connected to other component like transistors, diodes, resistors and capacitors to form an amplifier or an oscillator. In this tutorial we shall learn about applications of integrated circuits and common ICs used. In previous tutorials we have learnt about types of ICs including analogs and digitals.
They are use in different circuits and applications.
For example an analog integrated circuit can be specified for amplification, oscillation, switching and power control while driving are use for vedio and graphics signals processing, calculations and logic controlls below are the applications of ICs and common microchips use for the applications.
Appllications of Integrated circuits.
1. Switching.
Some integrated circuits are designed for switching, they contain transistors which turns current ON and OFF when triggered by some conditions. They are use for producing radio frequency which can be use to transfer electricity wirelessly or audio and sound telecommunications. Some switching ICs are use for making inverters and oscillators since their switching speed can be controlled. 555 timer is a common IC for switching and oscillation.
2. Amplification.
Some integrated circuits are use for current and voltage amplification. They are coupled with discrete electronic components to amplify low signals, voltage or sound signals. The following are amplifiers ICs.
A. Audio amplifiers.
Audio amplifiers are one of the types of integrated circuit amplifiers, they are use to amplify low audio signals. They are use in television sets, megaphones and microphones, home theaters and many other audio devices. B. Operational amplifiers. They are commonly used IC, just like audio amplifier ICs they are use for amplification. They amplify signals just like a transistor amplifier.
3. Voltage regulation.
Some integrated circuits are manufactured to regulate voltage from a DC power supply. For example a 6v regulator IC can regulate 6v from a 6.9v to any amount as long as it's DC.
4. CMOS integrated circuits.
CMOS integrated circuits are mostly used in circuits compared with FETs because of their capabilities like low power consumption and lower threshold voltage. N type MOSFET and P type MOSFET are fabricated into a single chip to form a CMOS IC.
5. Logic processing.
Integrated ICs are use for logic calculations, decision making and controlling. Logic circuits or chips are designed with logic gates that only works on true(1) or false(0). Logic gates connected together in circuits gives an output based on the circuit connected, the output is use for performing a specific intended task.
6. Timing. ICs like LM555 IC .
Otherwise known as 555 timer are used for counting purposes and keeping record of time. They are use for making LED flasher circuits, pressup counters etc.
